David Cameron has travelled to Scotland in his first official visit as Prime Minister.
The PM was accompanied by new Secretary of State for Scotland Danny Alexander and went straight to the Scottish Parliament in Holyrood, Edinburgh, where he was greeted by Presiding Officer Alex Fergusson.
Speaking to journalists and assembled staff in the Scottish Parliament, the PM called for an “agenda of respect” between the Westminster and Edinburgh parliaments.
He said:
“I also want to see a fresh start in the relationship between the British Prime Minister and the Scottish First Minister. This relationship is important.
“However much we may disagree about issues we should try to work together for the benefit of the whole of the United Kingdom and for the benefit of Scotland as well. That is what I’m determined to do.”
The PM also added that Holyrood is the first Parliament he has visited since becoming Prime Minister, adding “I hope that shows a sign of how I want our United Kingdom to work.”
Following his visit to the Scottish Parliament, the PM travelled on to St Andrew’s House for talks with First Minister Alex Salmond.
The PM outlined his determination to work cooperatively and respectfully with the Scottish Government and his commitment to devolution. He reiterated his willingness to appear before the Scottish Parliament if invited and for Westminster Ministers to work closely with their Scottish counterparts.
Discussions also focused on the economy and the state of the public finances and its implications on spending. All agreed with the need for a constructive and open dialogue.
